CARING FOR YOUR TRUST

IslamicFamily understands that your donation is a trust - amanah - to us and for the people we serve. Your donation goes towards helping IslamicFamily continue to serve people like Amr. IslamicFamily is a responsible, transparent and efficient steward of zakat (a giving of a fortieth of one's wealth to the poor that is one of the five pillars of Islam incumbent upon people with means), sadaqah (voluntary charity), and grants from government and foundations. Our zakat policy outlines the lengths to which IslamicFamily goes to ensure that donations are handled in a manner consistent with religious requirements, expectations and needs of the community, and the Canada Revenue Agency.

THE DETAILS

IslamicFamily has been posting its audited financial statements on the web for more than a decade. Since 2017, IslamicFamily has used a funds-based accounting system that allows it to track every dollar received and every expense with its intended purpose. Each donation or grant received is restricted to a specific use, and donors can direct the use of their donations toward a particular program. Every donation is tracked to one of the following categories:
  • Zakat: the fifth pillar of faith, due once per lunar year upon people with the means. Learn more hereIslamicFamily uses zakat to support Muslims with for food, crisis, and habitation.
  • Zakat Ul-Fitr: due in the month of Ramadan, and is approximately $12, due on all Muslims. IslamicFamily uses Zakat Ul-Fitr to top up food hampers with additional staple products like lentils, dates and oil.
  • Donations for Domestic Violence
  • Sadaqa or General Donations: this supports crucial areas not covered by grants or other funds.
Each of these categories, along with the different grants awarded to IslamicFamily from various external organizations and government bodies, are maintained as separate financial statements within the accounting system. This means that, at any point in time, IslamicFamily's management and Board are able to see the precise amounts of money raised, spent and available for each of these categories. Each charge is reviewed and approved for use of the dollars available within the specific fund.

The responsibility to hold the organization’s funds in stewardship, faithfully and transparently, is taken seriously by both our Board and staff. We strive to ensure that all funds received are used in the most appropriate manner. For more information, please contact info@ifssa.ca
